This last week has been pretty full of emotions and today marks one year from when my life started to take the turn that I never would have imagined.
One year ago today Jennifer went into St James for a scan that would ultimately start the identification of the neuroendocrine cancer in her liver. She had the scan done and we got it on a CD and we left for Mesquite on July 8.
Yesterday’s celebration of life at the Copper King was a very nice event. Mike’s son Richard gave a very nice eulogy and then Mike’s 13 year old grandson Logan got up and talked about his grandfather and their relationship. I was blown away by how mature and composed this young man was. Logan has experienced more than his fair share of grief in his young 13 years. He lost his mother to cancer when he was a toddler, he lost his grandmother to Parkinson’s a few years later and then his grandfather, with whom he shared a very special relationship.
Jennifer’s brother Dan also spoke and did a nice job speaking about growing up with Mike. Then a couple of Mike’s co-workers got up and spoke about their relationships with Mike. Several of his coworkers had traveled in from around the country to celebrate his life. There were numerous child and high school friends that also attended.
They had good food and a open bar. So it was very nice event and his boys sent him off right.
We sat around and visited for quite a while after the celebration. It was then decided we we would meet up for pizza at Silver Bow at 6:00. I had about two hours to kill before then. Since we were basically just across the street from the cemetery, I decided to go to the cemetery for a bit. They had several plants that were table center pieces that they were just going to throw out. Elaine thought it would be nice to put one on Mick and Roses grave, so I took one out and did that after I visited Jennifer.
While I was at the cemetery I called Janice and Kenn, they were unable to make it up for the celebration, as they were in Silver City, NM enjoying time with their newest grandchild Myra and their grandson Turner. They had started their way home to Gillette, WY yesterday and were just outside Trinidad, CO when I called and were planning to stop in Pueblo, CO for the evening.
The pizza get together did not turn out like we hoped. Elaine, Jim and I got there early, hoping to get a big table. We walked in and there was one big table in the back and we thought we were golden. Well we walked up to the table and found that it and a couple of other smaller tables were already reserved. What we did not know was there was a kids baseball All Star tournament in town. So we ended up being spread out in small groups around the restaurant.
It worked, but not the way we were hoping. I was also able to get some more of Jennifer’s memory bears distributed to folks.
All in all it was a nice, but pretty emotional day. I was worn out when I got home. Fortunately I slept hard and actually slept for over 8 hours the first time I have done that in a long time.
Well I better get moving. I want to work on getting the trailer ready for sale today.
