So this morning I was thinking about what we could have for dinner. Then it dawned on me that I saw a Uncle Wiley’s dirty rice seasoning in my Mom’s cupboard the other day. This mix was a favorite of Jennifer’s and mine when we were working. Brown up some ground beef or Turkey and cook up some rice add Wiley’s dry seasoning mix and there you have it Dirty Rice.
Now before I go further, I have to explain that you can no longer get this seasoning mix. Uncle Wiley’s quit making it about 10 + years ago.
My Mom has a long history of having ingredients that have been around for a while. We once found a can of pumpkin in her pantry that was old enough to vote. She would buy things with the good intentions of making something with them, but for one reason or another it would not happen. Her go to excuse would be that my father would probably not eat it. Anyway this habit was something that Jennifer and I would kid my Mom about. Jennifer would have had a heyday giving my Mom shit about still having this mix. As I type this I can hear her laughing about it in my head.
Anyway I cooked it up tonight and it was just as tasty as I remembered, Jennifer would have enjoyed it as well. We were heartbroken when Uncle Wiley’s quit making it. Uncle Wiley’s got health conscious and started making lower sodium and healthier seasonings, I guess dirty rice did not make the cut.
Anyway, it brought a smile to my face when I found it the other day and I waited until after we had eaten to give my Mom some crap about it. I told her if Jennifer was here she would have been razzing her for still having that mix and I explained why. She took my razzing pretty well.
Anyway it made me smile and that is always good, regardless if the mix was 10+ years old. So far none of us have gotten sick, but that call may be a little early. We will see what tomorrow brings. Even if we do, it was still a good memory for me and to hear her laughing in my head was well worth it.
