Tough Day Of Bocce

Well my playing partner Gary and I had a rough first day in Bocce tournament. We went 1 for 4 and the one game we won was the last one of the day. PHopefully we do a little better today. We just did not get the benefit of good bounces (for the lack of a better descriptor) but that’s bocce. We had some great throws but for one reason or another did not end up with the points we needed.

After Bocce I went to a ribbon cutting event a the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) for two new programs they are starting at the college. One is for HVAC technicians and the other is for medical assisting. These programs came from hard work of many groups of people including my fellow Rotarians Darlene and Chantile who both work at CSN. Several members of our Rotary Club attended the event so that was very nice to see.

It was a very interesting event. There is a charitable trust from the Frias family that has helped fund these programs. The story of this family is a interesting one. Charlie and Phylis Frias came from San Antonio to Southern Nevada in the late 1950’s and worked hard and established a transportation business empire. They started with buying a small taxi cab company and eventually had the largest transportation company in Southern Nevada when they retired. This couple had no children but the they established this charitable trust that focuses on education of children in Southern Nevada. Charlie and Phylis have been deceased for several years now. However their legacy continues because of the trust they established and the trust has funded some great programs and scholarships for kids in Southern Nevada. The trust has given real estate properties and undeveloped land to numerous groups in Southern Nevada. Here in Mesquite they gave a strip mall to the Mesquite Works program and the Mesquite STEAM center is housed in this center. Just a amazing and inspiring story.

A interesting statistic was quoted that only 30% of the areas kids go onto College. So that means 70% are going into the work force in some capacity. Many end up in the hospitality industry because of the Casino’s here. However, there is a need for many other skills here such as medical and HVAC technicians. So thus why these programs were chosen as a starting point. CSN also has a Certified Nurse Assistant program. Anyway these are great opportunities for people in the community and I hope they get more students into the programs. Sadly we heard about hurdles that have been in place because of politics and that is sad, but they are working at breaking these hurdles down.

Last night I watched the Vice Presidential debate. It was at least a fairly civil mud slinging debate, but I wish those hosting the debates would come up with a better process to make the debate participants actually answer the questions that are posed to them. Both candidates tried to redirect or avoid answering the questions asked to them by talking about things unrelated to the question asked.

One thing that is amazing to me is that both Trump and Vance makes these statements about how the country is going to hell because of “Kamala Harris’s policies”. Hey folks guess? She is the Vice President not the President, so she does not have ultimate say in what policies or positions the Biden/Harris does or takes. However they make it sound like she is running the show. Also they never recognize that there is a whole legislative body that has a role in all of this shit show and that the branch (Congress) their party controls has done jack shit for the last four years. Anyway, I thought it was a waste of time but interesting.

Well today is another day of bocce and then a meeting of the Pickleball Club membership. That should be interesting. So another busy day.

Well enough for today.
