Resurrecting Holy Savior And Finlen Hotel Turning 100

It was another busy day. Today was shower day for Dad so that always is busy, but today being Rotary day it was extra busy. We had to run some errands before Rotary. So it was very busy.

Also we got some sad news this morning. A old family friend Guido Bugni passed away from injuries sustained in a auto accident. In addition to being a family friend Guido was also my Chemistry professor at Carroll College. He was a great professor and a hell of a nice guy. So that was sad. I am going to try and attend the funeral in Helena next week.

We had to take a urine sample to Dad's urologist to make sure his urinary infection is being kept at bay, then we went to the Butte archives to pick up a couple of copies of a documentary movie that is called "Resurrecting Holy Savior. It has info about the McQueen, Meaderville neighborhoods of Butte. These were all neighborhoods that were gobbled up by the Anaconda Company and are where the Berkeley Pit is today.

Then we ran up to the Montana Tech Foundation office so I could make our annual donation before the end of the year. We always try to donate every year to the Industrial Hygiene Department and the on campus food bank. Tech has a lot of students that live off campus and many can't afford both school and food. So a couple of years ago a on campus food bank was started and we felt that was a good thing to donate to.

Then it was off to Rotary. We got there just in time for the meeting. After the meeting we had to run a few more errands and then back home. I whipped up some French Dip sandwiches and then we watched the Holy Savior video.

The documentary video is important to my family for several reasons. One that was the parish that my family attended when I was a young child. In fact, I was the last kid to make my first holy communion in the church. It was closed shortly after I made that.

Also a couple of historical paintings from the church were saved from being sold by my good friend CD Holter's Dad Tom Holter. They are currently housed in the Butte archives. They were commissioned paintings from a Famous Croatian artist. One is of the Ressurection of Christ and the other is of the Ascension of Christ.

The sad thing about how the Anaconda Company handled the buildings (church and grade school) is pretty sad. They literally just buried them. They did not tear them down and they did not even remove a lot of the items inside them. Somehow these two paintings got out but not much else. The photo below is the cover of the video and has a picture of mine truck dumping waste rock on the church.

The video was well done and was very interesting.

On the local news this evening they had a piece on how the Finlen Hotel is turning 100 years old. In 2024. They are going to have a big bash to celebrate the milestone on New Year's Eve. As I have mentioned before, both Janice and Jennifer worked at the Finlen during college as a house cleaners and check in clerks. However, the ownership has changed since those days.

So it was a Butte history evening.

Well enough for today.
