Peanut Butter!

It is funny how certain little things will trigger emotions. This morning I finished off the peanut butter jar, it was empty, so I went to the pantry and got another one. My folks prefer Skippy creamy peanut butter. Jennifer and I ( mainly Jennifer) preferred Jiff. To me peanut butter is peanut butter so no big deal.

However, this morning when I grabbed the replacement peanut butter, I got choked up and teary. For 30+ years of our marriage Jennifer would only eat creamy peanut butter. It was during our 30 day (which was supposed to be a 3 day stay) stay with Jim and Elaine that she finally opened her mind and finally tried crunchy peanut butter. Guess what, she liked it!

I prefer crunchy peanut butter if I have a choice, but that was a sacrifice/concession or whatever you want to call it that I made early in our marriage. Happy wife, happy life so I just ate creamy peanut butter. Now Jennifer ate a lot more peanut butter than I did, she ate it pretty much every day. So I just conceded and suffered in silence (If you believe that, then you don’t know me very well), but let’s just say it was a battle just not worth fighting. So for 30+ years the only peanut butter we had in the house was creamy.

Well once she got a taste for crunchy she became a switch hitter, we had two jars of peanut butter in the house. Some days she would have crunchy and some days she would have creamy.

When we were first married we could not afford luxuries like two types of peanut butter, but even when had the financial means to afford those luxuries she held firm to her guns. We were a creamy house and that was that. She did most of the food shopping so I really did not care that much and like I said she ate more of it than I did. I would occasionally mention it would be nice to have crunchy peanut butter, but that would usually result in “Well then you do the shopping”. Now I might have been born at night, but it was not last night, so I just shut my mouth and lived with creamy peanut butter.

Well this morning all those memories/thoughts came into my mind and I got a little choked up and teary. I battled through it, but was weird how that little thing brought on the emotions.

Have been busy today getting all of Mom’s cook books back into the house and on the shelf. Mom has a lot of fricking cookbooks. Now I have to admit that Jennifer and I contributed pretty heavily to her cook book addiction. I saw at least a dozen or more that we gave her through the years. Pretty much from every place we lived and/or visited over the years. She would get cookbooks from us for birthdays, holidays, etc. so I guess I really can’t bitch about it too much. She has a good collection of cookbooks from Junior Leagues from around the country.

I also got the kitchen refrigerator freezer cleaned out in preparation for the new one coming tomorrow. I will get the refrigerator portion cleaned out this evening after dinner. Now there were a couple of items that I decided to use this morning. So I cooked up some shrimp and noodles for lunch and also made a banana bread from some bananas we had in the freezer for that. I also, cleaned out the produce crisper and made up some more coleslaw. I had made some last night for dinner but still had cabbage left over, so finished off the cabbage by adding it to the left over coleslaw.

Also we are having pork chop sandwiches tonight for dinner so went ahead and cut up a tomato and onion for that tonight. A neighbor Cindy Napier had brought over some onions and carrots from her garden yesterday so I used those. I had used the carrots in the coleslaw, but still had onions. So some went in the shrimp and noodles and some are for the pork chops tonight. We still have some left so they got moved to the refrigerator at my grandpas house until the new refrigerator gets here.

We have also been getting rid of a bunch of old wheels and tires. Both Cindy and I have posted them on Facebook marketplace for free. The large pile has been dwindling. We have tires of various sizes and vintages and people have been coming to pick through the pile. Hopefully some folks are coming this evening to get some more. That will just keep us from having to pay to take them to the dump.

Some people are folks that are restoring old vehicles and just need a wheel or tire tires to get them from a field to a trailer or shop. Some are using them for other things. We had a gal who raises gurnsey goats who came and took a bunch (like 9) for her goats to play on. She buries them halfway in the ground and the goats jump on them.

Still have some more China cabinet stuff to get over. Yesterday I had Dad polishing some of the silver pieces mom has, that gave him something to do.

We are also testing a new landline phone system that we may get the folks transferred over to. It is cellular but a landline that does not use copper wires and is about a quarter of the cost. However, before we fully commit we are doing a 14 day test. So far things are working pretty good and Dad has been putting it through it paces this morning. Their current landline service sucks, mainly because the phone company’s equipment is antiquated and the technicians they have don’t know how to work on it. There are only 3 people in the Elk Park area that are still on the system so we are surprised they have not just taken it out of service. If all goes well there may only be two households on that system

Cindy, Chad and Colleen have been having a garage sale for a bunch of items from the house that did not go in the auction. They have been doing pretty good, but have had some characters show up. I guess Cindy went to battle with some old bat that showed up yesterday and was bitching about prices and quality of items. Cindy said the old crow was just trying to screw her, so she held her ground. I guess that lady did not realize who she was messing with.

They have been running it from 9 am to 6 pm. Yesterday she had a couple of people there at 7:00 am waiting in their cars. They made like $600 yesterday, have not heard a report for today yet.

Well enough for today.
