Well started the day with some interesting but sad news. Our old employer Marathon Oil Company is being bought by ConocoPhillips. In some ways it is amazing they lasted this long. The company has a long history (137 years) of fighting off the big guys.
Jennifer and I started as College interns in Cody, Wy and then got hired as full time employees in Lafayette, LA then onto Midland, TX to Findlay, OH, to Houston, TX, back to Lafayette, LA, then to Pittsburgh, PA and finally to San Antonio, TX. 26 interesting years.
Of course we went through numerous booms and busts and sweated out threats of layoffs, rumors of buyouts, etc. We saw Marathon during some of its best times and some of its worse times.
Back in the 80’s (before our time) they fought of being swallowed by Mobile Oil with US Steel being their supposed White Knight. We joined Marathon when it was part of US Steel. We were there when the company was split into two companies (Marathon Petroleum and Marathon Oil Company). When that happened we were pretty sure Marathon Oil would not last, that it would get bought or cease to exist. Well it took 13 years but apparently that finally has come to fruition.
It will be interesting to see how this all plays out and what it means for me, in regards to my insurance. Just will have to see how it plays out. Nothing I can do about it, but will have to roll with the punches.
