Last night after the football game, I was channel surfing and saw that they were televising the professional disc golf national championship. So I turned it in on and it got me to reminiscing.
In the summer/fall of 2019 Jennifer and I decided to take up Disc Golf. It was actually Jennifer's idea. She had gotten the bug from her nephew Mike Benner, who is a big disc golfer. We did some research and found there were a couple of disc golf courses near our house in San Antonio. So we consulted with Mike and we bought a set of beginner discs. Being the cheapskates that we were, at first we just bought one set and thought we could share them. However, after one round we found that was not real practical (because we really sucked). When we threw we were usually heading different directions so trying to share discs was a pain in the ass. So we bought another set of discs so we each had our own. That way we could each chase our own discs.
One course was just a couple of miles from the house. It was a 9 hole course and it suited our games pretty well. It had a little variety but for the most part was a pretty forgiving course with the exception of the last two holes. Thank god we took this up, because during Covid it became a activity that we could do together and get some exercise. It was outdoors and there was rarely anyone else on the course when we were.
Now to say we both sucked is a understatement, but we had fun and we had a lot of laughs and there was a fair bit of cursing by both of us. So overall some good memories.
Over time we both got a little better at it, but we were far from good at it. Anyway we spent many a afternoon in 2020 playing at least 9 holes at the little course in Fair Oaks Ranch subdivision. Technically we were not supposed to be playing on that course as the park it was in was for Fair Oaks Ranch residents. However, no one ever questioned us about living in Fair Oaks Ranch. We always took Jennifer's car because we felt it made us look like we probably lived there.
We did go to two other 9 hole courses that were not far from us to give them a go. One was at a elementary school in Boerne and the other was around a church in San Antonio. We didn't really care for either course and the Fair Oaks course was much closer to the house. So we stuck with trespassing.
Anyway, watching that tournament for a little bit last night brought up some good memories of a activity that we both enjoyed. That was one disappointment about Mesquite is that there are currently no disc golf courses in Mesquite. So we did not get to play any in 2022 or 2023.
We did also buy 2 more sets of discs for our trailer. We did try to play two times in the summer of 2021 in Butte and that really highlighted how shitty we we were. The courses were much tougher and less forgiving. However we still enjoyed it and had some good laughs as we had to climb like mountain goats to retrieve some of our discs. Fortunately we never lost a disc, but we came close a couple of times.
However the closest we ever came was in Boerne. It was me that damn near lost it. As I said the last two holes on the Boerne course were not forgiving. Anyway I got a disc stuck way up in a tall tree. Jennifer and I tried everything we could think of to get it out. We tried shaking the tree, but it was too big to get any movement. We tried throwing rocks at the disc to knock it loose (we sucked at that too), so after about a hour we decided to give up. The disc had my name and phone number on it so we thought if it fell out and some one found it we may get a call. The night I got it stuck we had a pretty good wind storm. So the next day we went back out and low and behold it got blown out of the tree and we found it in the dry creek bed below the tree. Thankfully the storm was only wind and not rain and wind, because it probably would have floated off. Anyway we kept our streak of not losing a disc alive.
Well enough for today. Got a lot of things to do before I hopefully fly out tomorrow. The weather is supposed to get crappy starting today. However it is supposed to get really crappy and cold later in the week. I am praying it does not for poor Colleen. It is what it is and we will deal with it.
