Jennifer would have been excited for this weekend for several reasons. One is that the Benner’s are coming to visit and going to the football game in St George, but also because it is the first “College Game Day” of the season. It still makes me smile how she got so interested in College football in the last years of her life.
She liked watching “College Game Day” on ESPN and reading the signs in the crowd and looking for the Washington State Cougar Flag in the crowd, seeing who the guest picker was and who they picked.
I typically would be golfing and she would text me what the funniest signs were or if something interesting was happening on the show or if something funny or controversial happened.
When we got married I never ever would have thought she would get that interested in football. She was even starting to understand some of the nuances of the game and penalty signals. She would ask me a lot of questions about aspects of the game. Sometimes I would get frustrated by the questions, but oh how I would love to have her asking me those questions today.
Nick Saban has joined the “College Game Day” crew this year, I don’t know how she would have felt about Lord Saban joining the crew. She always laughed when they talked about him on the radio program Full Ride, they always called him Lord Saban and played the Star Wars Imperial March music in the background when his name came up.
It is a little ironic that Game Day is at College Station, Texas for the Notre Dame vs Texas A&M for this seasons kickoff show. Notre Dame is my favorite college team. We did not care for Texas A&M that much for several reasons. However, the first major football game we went to was a Texas A&M vs LSU football game in Baton Rouge. We had gotten free tickets to the game from a vendor. It was a brutally hot and humid day so it was not the most comfortable game to watch. In fact there were at least three people hauled out of the stands on stretchers because of heat stroke.
Well it sounds like it is a hot and humid day in College station for today’s game. So they may be hauling some folks out Kyle field today.
Last night I tuned into KBOW to catch the second half of the Butte Central vs Ronan football game. My friend CD Holter was the “color “ man for the broadcast. When I tuned in the 3rd quarter was ending and Butte Central was up 25-0. Then it got interesting. It apparently was a hot evening in Ronan and the Maroons started suffering cramping problems. Now Butte Central does not have a deep roster so they don’t have a lot of subs and kids were going down left and right with cramps. Ronan started to battle back and the final score was 32-22. However based on CD’s color commentary it was a true show of toughness by the Maroons as they had absolutely nothing left in the tank when the game ended. It was Central’s first opening day win since 2018. I just hope these kids get re-hydrated and did not wear themselves out for the rest of the season.
Well I think I am ready for the weekend. I have the kids air mattresses blown up and ready for them. I have a menu for breakfast on Sunday morning and the house is pretty much in order.
Yesterday I went and played Pickleball for a bit in the morning and then ran some errands. I did get Jennifer’s phone number canceled on Thursday. Probably should have done that earlier than I did, but I needed to go thru all the various apps and other things that had that number as our main contact number and get it changed to mine. Anyway, that has been done.
It was bittersweet and hard to fathom getting rid of her number. I actually felt a little guilty about it, like I was erasing a part of her from my life, but life goes on and I don’t need to be supporting AT&T financially anymore than I am already doing.
Well I better jump in the shower and get ready to go up and play in the Saturday morning putting tournament at the putting green.
