Today was a Bocce and Bowling day. Two activities that Jennifer enjoyed doing. She was better at both of them than I am. However, today I would have given her a run for her money at least on my second game of bowling. She would probably have cleaned my clock like everyone else did in the first game.
I can't remember if I have written about this, so if it's a repeat I am sorry. But it's my blog so I get to write about whatever I want and if I repeat myself I could care less.
Jennifer and I took up bowling fairly regularly in San Antonio after we retired. On Wednesdays, I would go golfing in the morning and then we would meet at the bowling alley which was conviently not to far from the courses that I played. Now we would usually get there at about 11:00 am (in golf we were usually the first or second group off, so we could get 18 holes in fairly quickly) we would usually bowl two games and then we would go to lunch. Usually What-a- Burger occasionally we would go to PotBelly or Fire House. It was interesting that it usually was the same guy working the counter and he always gave us the Senior rate even though we technically did not qualify for it. I guess he figured if we were there at 11:00 in the morning we must have been old and retired. Well he was partially right we were retired. However, we never questioned it, a discount is a discount.
For the first couple of weeks we rented shoes. Then we decided we would bite the bullet and buy shoes. We talked about getting balls but we also we knew we were going to be moving at some point in the not too distant future, so we held off on that because we did not want the hassle and cost of adding bowling balls to our moving stuff.
We had fun doing this and did a lot of trash talking, but we also really supported each other. We would cheer each other if we got a strike or a spare. We would moan and groan if we just missed one or made the dreaded field goal shot.
The bowling alley was a older alley, but it was very clean and we liked the 80's music videos and music they played while we were there. So it was a good cheap form of entertainment. I think it was like $8 for both of us to bowl two games. The scoring system had some funny choices with little guys that would both cheer and jeer you depending on your shot.
Well sadly Covid hit and unfortunately the alley was a casualty. It did not reopen after Covid, so that is when we took up disc golf (but that is another story for another day).
So when we got to Mesquite we started bowling again and we decided to bite the bullet and buy our own balls. So we looked around and found a bowling shop in Vegas. So we drove over and met with the folks there. Interestingly enough the guy that fit us for our balls used to manage the Virgin River Bowling alley, but he moved to Vegas after Covid. Anyway he still came to Mesquite frequently to visit friends and actually delivered our balls to us. The balls had to be drilled for our finger patterns so we could not get them the same day we bought them, but it worked out just fine with him bringing them over.
Then we bought individual bowling bags. Mine was orange and Jennifer's was green. My balls is dark blue with orange lettering and her was a blue and green swirl ball so it worked out good. Dorothy has been test driving Jennifer's ball. Today she was very sweet and asked me if it bothered me that she was using Jennifer's ball. It is just the opposite I am glad to see someone using it (I think I have stated multiple times I hate seeing things going to waste). Actually it kind of makes me feel like she is there with us. I gave Margot Jennifer's shoes a while back (she has the same size feet) and that also makes me feel good to see them getting used and also makes me feel like she is with us.
Jennifer had a very smooth ball release it was not ever moving fast but it was smooth and usually in the middle of the lane, she rarely threw a gutter ball on her first ball. She might throw one trying to pick up a spare but rarely on the first ball. I on the other hand am a totally different story, I find the gutter regularly but in the second game today I found a little something and was able to bowl a respectable 147. We will not talk about the first game, just suffice to say it was only in the double digits.
Again this was sport that Jennifer would trash talk with the best of them on. She would have really enjoyed today. We had Margot, Allen, Dorothy, Sheri and me. Andy had a double header softball game so he did not play with us today. We had some good laughs and it was fun.
Margot and I were on the same team at Bocce today and that was fun as well. We had three good games. We only won one, but we had some good throws and all of the games were pretty close and Margot and I did throw a Casino (4 points) in the game we won.
Well I got a few things to do yet this evening. Tomorrow I have to get up early and go for my annual physical and then have a appointment at Discount Tire to get my tires rotated and balanced.
