A Snob Want To Be

Writer's picture: sologubj9sologubj9

Over the years I have found out that I am not a snob on pretty much anything. I am not a wine snob, a beer snob, a whisky snob, or even a coffee snob. I guess I am just a snob want to be.

The reason I bring this up is I recently purchased some craft coffee that I thought I might like and elevate me into the coffee snob category. I got it in the mail and yesterday I brewed a couple of cups and guess what? It was coffee. Was it different than my everyday off the shelf coffee (Folgers breakfast blend). Yes, but was it different enough to make me want to purchase more of it. The answer to that question is no.

So I am one of those people where coffee is coffee, beer is beer and whisky is whisky. I don’t drink wine so am definitely not a snob in that category. Do I like some more than others yes, but if a supposed inferior one of any of these is put in front of me I am likely going to drink it (especially if I did not pay for it). So like I said I am comfortable saying I am not a snob when it comes to these things.

So about the coffee. I purchased this coffee from a company run by a couple I have been following on YouTube for several years. This couple would have been called “hippies” when I was a kid, but it has been interesting following them via the years. Their channel is called The Nomadic Movement.

So this couple are from the Boston area originally. They purchased a old YMCA bus (a small one) and they converted it to a camper and they took it to Alaska and then they took it from Alaska down to South America and settled in Panama. I watched a couple of their videos prior to them getting to Panama, but when they got to Panama, I started following them regularly.

They purchased a piece of land in Panama and put the van on it up on blocks on the land. They were renting a apartment in town and were planning on building on the land. They had parked the van and then the pandemic hit and they moved out into the van full time.

These people had no real skills as far as building goes. They made some changes to the van and built a deck around it. They have learned how to weld, However, they decided they were going to build a workshop and then make it a workshop/house. They did that and moved out of the van because it was starting to have mold issues, etc.

Anyway it has been interesting following this couple. During this they started a coffee company paterning with a guy who was a barista. They named their company The Morning Movement pretty much as a joke. The company has really grown and they recently decided to change the name and it is now called The Movement.

I do commend them for what they are doing. They work with coffee farmers all over South America, but Panama particularly and are trying to get everyone a fair share of the business. They have also opened a coffee shop and roastery in Stowe, Vermont. They have had an adorable baby girl. So they have done well.

I would often tell Jennifer about the video’s and their trials and tribulations she had told me I should try some of their coffee, but I just never did it. Anyway, I have continued to watch their channel. The other day they announced they were changing the name of the company and it was the last chance to get a bag of the Morning Movement coffee and also a bag of their new Movement coffee.

So I decided to finally do it and bought some coffee. Again is it good, the answer is Yes, but I guess my palate is just not refined enough to tell the difference between the two coffee. I may brew a cup of both to compare side by side and see if I can tell any difference.

The last couple of days I volunteered at the Black Desert Classic Golf tournament with Rotary. We were responsible for guiding cars in the parking lots. On Monday I worked the 4:00 am to 8:00 am shift. Since it was the first day of the tournament week it was not real busy. A St George Rotarian and myself worked at Lot 11 which was a small lot. We only had 2 cars come to that lot and both of those came at about 5:15 am. So we just sat and BS’d. Once it got light out I snapped a couple of photos of the course. It is a new course and it is built in a old volcano lava field so most of the holes are surrounded by Black Lava (Thus the course name).

We were near the 12th green and 13th tee box.

On Tuesday I worked from noon until 4:00 pm and was in the biggest lot. Lot 7. It was much busier on Tuesday and I parked about 50 cars. It was hot and a little dusty, even though they had water trucks coming through watering the roads and lots. Long shift but hopefully will get our club a few bucks. The St George clubs were getting some funds for doing this.

What I will say is that the amount of money spent to put on one of these PGA events is staggering. It is definitely a lot. Just the amount of people they require to work these events is unreal. Hopefully it stays and maybe next year I will volunteer for both Rotary but also doing something on the actual course.

Today I decided to also get up early to watch the implosion of the Tropicana Casino in Las Vegas. The local CBS channel televised it. Again a very expensive event. The Tropicana was closed and is being torn down to build a new 33,000 seat baseball park for the now Oakland A’s there will also be a new resort built on the grounds.

The implosion was done in true Vegas fashion with lots of fireworks and pyro-drones. The drones were pretty cool as they displayed various messages and signs. Another Vegas landmark has disappeared and a new one will go in its place.

Jennifer and I had gambled a little bit at the Tropicana, it was not one of our favorites but we did gamble a little there. In fact I have a poker chip that I kept from it and temporarily used as a golf ball marker. I still have it somewhere.

It was cool to watch the implosion and boy did it put up a dust cloud.

Today I will also compete it what should be a fun event. It is a competition between a couple of the villages here in Sun City. The events are Bocce, Corn hole and Golf putting. My team will be the Dusty Bridge (Dusty Rose/Bridge Landing neighborhoods) team and we will be competing against a team from Tortoise Ridge and Tortoise Mountain. Things will kick off with a pot luck lunch and then the events.

Then I have my weekly Rotary meeting tonight.

So another busy day ahead. Well enough for today.
